TECHNICAL DATA SHEET

FaQ`s

1. What grade of stainless steel is used for Bollard Canada bollards?

Bollard Canada offers bollards manufactured from 304 and 316 stainless steel, depending on the model and application. For demanding outdoor environments, 316 stainless steel is recommended because of its superior resistance to corrosion, moisture, road salt and de-icing chemicals.

2. What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

Both grades provide excellent durability and corrosion resistance. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, giving it greater resistance to chlorides and salt. This makes it particularly suitable for Canadian winters, coastal environments, parking facilities and locations exposed to road salt.

3. What is stainless steel passivation?

Passivation is a treatment that removes surface contaminants and promotes the formation of stainless steel’s natural protective oxide layer. It can improve resistance to corrosion, staining and environmental exposure, helping maintain the appearance and performance of the stainless steel over time.

4. Are stainless steel bollards suitable for Canadian winters and coastal environments?

Yes. 316 stainless steel is particularly well suited to harsh Canadian conditions, including snow, moisture, road salt and de-icing chemicals. It is also an excellent choice for coastal environments. Regular cleaning is recommended in areas with heavy salt exposure.

5. What types of stainless steel bollards does Bollard Canada offer?

Bollard Canada offers fixed, bolt-down, removable, retractable and threaded-base stainless steel bollards, as well as stainless steel bollard covers and architectural models. The appropriate configuration depends on the site, desired appearance and access-control requirements.

6. Are stainless steel urban bollards anti-ram or crash-rated?

No. Standard Bollard Canada stainless steel urban bollards are not anti-ram or crash-rated unless specifically identified and certified as such. They are primarily intended to prevent or discourage passage, control access, define pedestrian or restricted areas, and provide an attractive architectural element.

Standard urban models will not withstand a high-impact vehicle collision and should not be used where certified vehicle-impact protection is required. For these applications, a dedicated anti-ram or crash-rated bollard system should be specified.

7. Can stainless steel bollards be powder coated or customized?

Yes. Selected models can be powder coated in different colors to complement architectural designs or improve visibility. Reflective tape and other finishing options may also be available depending on the model.

8. How should I clean and maintain a 316 stainless steel bollard?

Routine cleaning with clean water, mild soap and a soft lint-free cloth or soft nylon brush is generally sufficient. Rinse thoroughly and dry afterward. For brushed or satin finishes, always clean in the direction of the grain. Bollards exposed to road salt, marine conditions or de-icing chemicals should be cleaned more frequently.

9. What should I avoid when cleaning or working around stainless steel?

Do not use steel wool, carbon-steel brushes, aggressive abrasive pads or cleaners containing chlorides or harsh chemicals. Avoid welding, cutting, drilling or grinding carbon steel near stainless steel because airborne iron particles can contaminate the surface and cause rust staining. Keep concrete cleaners away from stainless steel and rinse immediately with clean water if accidental contact occurs.

10. What fasteners should be used with stainless steel bollards, and why can rust staining sometimes appear?

Use stainless steel fasteners and compatible tools and components whenever possible. Carbon-steel particles, contaminated tools, grinding dust or incompatible fasteners can deposit iron on the stainless-steel surface and subsequently produce rust-colored staining. This surface contamination does not necessarily mean the stainless steel itself is corroding. Clean handling, compatible hardware and proper maintenance help preserve its corrosion resistance and appearance.
