Painting on Galvanized Steel – What Happens After 1–2 Years

Galvanized steel is coated with zinc to protect it from corrosion. When exposed to air, zinc forms a natural oxide layer that prevents rust.
If painted too soon, the paint will not bond properly to this zinc surface — leading to peeling, flaking, and blistering after just 12 to 24 months.

After 1–2 years, galvanized steel can be painted only if it’s:

Thoroughly cleaned,

Lightly sanded or etched, and

Primed with zinc phosphate or epoxy primer before painting.

Even then, the result requires regular maintenance.

That’s why Bollard Canada recommends leaving galvanized steel unpainted or using our “Never Paint Again” HDPE or stainless-steel covers, which provide permanent color and protection without the need for repainting.

Paint Performance Summary

Paint on Galvanized SteelResult after 1–2 years
Painted too soon (fresh galvanizing)Paint peeling, flaking, blistering
Painted after surface aging, no prepPoor adhesion and uneven finish
Proper prep + primerAcceptable but costly, requires maintenance
Left unpainted / coveredLong-term protection, no maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between Schedule 40, 160, and XXM?

“Schedule” refers to wall thickness, not diameter.

Sch 40 = Standard-duty (light traffic areas)

Sch 160 = Heavy-duty (truck/dock protection)

XXM (XXS) = Maximum impact / anti-ram protection

2. Why choose galvanized steel over raw steel?

Galvanized steel resists corrosion, salt, and humidity — ideal for Canadian weather.
Raw steel is used when custom welding, powder coating, or fabrication is required.

3. Do galvanized pipes need paint?

No. The zinc coating already protects the steel. Painting often fails after 1–2 years unless properly prepared. That’s why we use HDPE or stainless-steel covers instead — they’re maintenance-free.

4. How deep should bollards be installed?

Standard installation depth is 36”–48” into concrete, depending on soil, impact requirements, and pipe size.

5. Are Bollard Canada pipes crash-rated?

Our heavy-wall Sch 160 and XXM pipes are engineered for impact resistance. For certified crash-rated (K4, M30–M50) systems, we can supply specialized assemblies on request.

6. What colors are available for HDPE covers?

Standard Safety Yellow, plus Red, White, Orange, Blue, Black, Lime Green, and Gray.
Custom colors and reflective bands available.

7. What warranty is included?

HDPE Covers: 5-year warranty against fading

Galvanized Pipe: Up to 20 years corrosion resistance (environment dependent)

Custom Assemblies: As specified per project

8. Are all Bollard Canada products made locally?

Yes — all products are designed and manufactured in Canada using North American steel and materials, ensuring reliability, performance, and compliance with Canadian safety standards.

Summary

Bollard Canada’s galvanized and raw steel pipes are engineered for superior strength, corrosion resistance, and low maintenance.
Paired with our “Never Paint Again” HDPE covers, they provide a long-lasting, cost-effective, and professional solution for every type of perimeter protection project

GENERAL APPLICATIONS:

The 4.5″ SCH 10 and 40 Pipe:
- might be used as protection for objects or building corners from collision by light weight machinery at best.
- may be utilized as delineators (visual queues) to drivers for traffic control where, if omitted by collsion, does not present greater problems than if    - it did not exist.
- may be used to hold non-critical signage like “reserved parking” for instance; not to hold stop signs for instance.
- can be used as stanchions for crowd control or queue line.
- as fixed immobile delineators.
- may be tall to hold signage high.
*SHOULD NOT EVER be used to protect people, or anything else for that matter, from vehicle impacts, even at low speeds.
* SHOULD NOT be used as a barricade or for building entrance protection.

*AS A BARRICADE: Nope, not even close. At minumum, use a 6-inch Schedule 40 pipe. To have more certainty in a barrier’s stopping force, it is  advised to use an impact-rated bollard system such as the C40, K4 or K12.
VARIETIES: ASTM A500 Carbon Steel Pipe is the common go-to choice for bollards. Although, it is sometimes sufficient to use a structural grade untested pipe. Of course, we also offer pipe that meets various prescribed ASTM and ASME standards.

Bollard Canada Inc bollards are made from high quality steel pipe and designed to protect buildings, pedestrians and equipment from vehicle or forklift collisions.

Our Steel Bollards are used in a wide variety of pedestrian and critical protection settings including: storefronts, parking lots, sidewalks, propane & fuel filling stations, gas & electric meters, fire hydrants, machinery protection and electric vehichle charging stations.
We stock an inventory of steel pipe 4 1/2" to 10 3/4'' and also 12 3/4''diameter for in ground installations.
Our bollards are offered in a variety of finishes including: raw steel, galvanized, prime painted or powder coated plus our recommended "Never Paint Again" - Bollard Covers in a variety of standard or custom colors.
We also offer custom fabricated bollards with cut-outs, eye bolts, removable options and signs
